The Land of Kama Sutra doesn't like Kissing

April 1st 2008 04:34

In a country of over a billion people, India is a nation whose problems are as huge as they are endless- corruption penetrates the government sector; poverty remains rife while those who are already wealthy keep getting richer. Discrimination and population control, amongst others, only add to this turbulent mix.

I point these out only to emphasise the problems that I believe should be taking precedent over what I am writing about in this piece. This article last year caught my eye and I couldn’t help but shake my head.

Really Long Link

Richard Gere committed blasphemy when he planted a few kisses upon one of Bollywood’s top actresses in full view of the public at an AIDS awareness concert.

Groups began burning effigies and slapping lawsuits on the Hollywood Actor, calling for this demon man to be reprimanded for his wickedness.

The need to respect cultures should always be adhered to and Gere probably should have thought before attempting any close contact with his fellow peers especially as this wasn’t his first visit to India, a country renowned for its extremely conservative culture.

However this whole situation shouldn’t have escalated to the point that it did. Reason being the obvious hypocrisy that screams out when you look at it closer.

There is rarely a commercial Bollywood film made where there isn’t some near naked sex kitten, gyrating to heavy beats, thrusting herself all over the screen and more than likely all over her hero. And these films are greeted with wolf whistles and cheers. The movie industry in India alone rakes in billions of Rupees a year. Clearly this sort of culture is going down a right treat with its audience. The same audience who are probably up in arms over Gere’s disregard for common decency.

They embrace the commercial Bollywood culture yet shun and admonish public displays of affection? Somehow this just doesn’t sit well.

Like it or not, the more society treats sex and all things related as sinful, taboo and something not to be discussed, the more they run the risk of rampantly spreading disease such as AIDS and STD’s.
