What the hell did Steve Irwin do to me?
September 27th 2006 04:20
I think there's been enough said about the great work that Steve Irwin did. What is amazing to me is the response of the public all over the world to his death. Famous people die all the time right? Famous people who do good works die all the time (of which Steve is certainly one of). Famous people who do good works for wildlife die. OK you get my drift. So why did almost 300 million people take time from work and play to tune in and watch this famous person's memorial on TV? This is what I'd like you, dear reader, to let me know.
I didn't realise how much I liked the guy, or respected his work, until he passed on. I was on my motorbike riding home from work and heard the news on the radio (it's a pretty flash motorbike). I was actually surprised by my response, I remember feeling shell shocked and quite upset. I've never met him but I always thought he was doing some great work for conserving our wildlife. I am employed in the environmental field but that's not why I liked him so much I don't think. I couldn't put my finger on it for days but I think I know why. The guy was just so passionate, and into life. So positive and such a proactive human being. In this day and age we're drawn more than ever to individuals like this. People who are flying the flag for living and making the most of life, and who don't preach it but live it. It's kinda rare you have to admit. Steve never wrote a book on how to be passionate about the earth or its inhabitants. He WAS the book, and an open one at that.
Steve's death got me thinking about what part could I play in letting people know about our wildlife. So I wrote to the good people here at Orble and said I'd like to write a blog about wildlife. They kindly agreed to let me. So dear readers, here I am. No I'm not a wildlife warrior, a crocodile wrestler or a snake charmer, and rarely I use the word 'Crikey', although I may break out from time to time. But I do enjoy our outdoor neighbours and know a little about our great natural environment.
So in answer to my post's title question, I guess Steve Irwin got me just a little bit passionate about living too.

He does what he does first for his passion, second for the TV. If the media didn't help him in the process of savinv wildlife he would have canned it. He even passed an invitation to a white house dinner, how many good doing celebrities will? Probably none.
I must actually express some cautious rage now. Russel Crowe is apparently 'in talks' about doing a movie aboud Irwins life, which is annoying enough, however a 'source' claims that Steve Irwin told Russel Crowe that he wanted Crowe to star in a movie about his life. I find that difficlt to swallow, sounds kind of artifical to me.

As for Russel playing Steve, I won't be rushing out to see the film. MB

He did mention on 'enough rope' that he was invited to a dinner in the white house but declined, 'just not interested' is what he said in relation to all the shizzaz associated with it.

Can you imagine the name and type of perfume it would be?! Possibly called 'Crikey' - scent of croc. MB

I, like yourself, didn't realize I felt so affectionately for the guy, until I heard the news. I've got a Wiggles Movie with him in it, and it was playing when I read the news. I caught myself looking from the computer, back to the TV, back to the Computer, I just couldn't believe it. I think If I could have seen my expression, it would have been shock. And disappointment. I've enjoyed everything I've watched that he's been in. His enthusiasm is contagious. I always go around with a fake Aussie accent for at least an hour after watching his shows.
I hope your work is well appreciated. Love the pics already.

I think the reason Australians in particular miss Steve is because he was a link between the old and the new Australia. He talked in Aussie slang and was a bit of an ocker, but he had a sensitive and emotional side not seen in the generations of men past. He was a just a really genuine and passionate bloke.

Its all in the culture, older culture, newer culture, both are wrong for their respective reasons.
Older culture because they turned men into heartless monsters (I exaggerate), nweer culture because if a guy has to be sensitive about others felings he also has to be gay...

Crickey! What a yob that bloody khaki-wearing wildlife molester was!
Worse than a politician kissing babies!
Frankly, we'd all had enough and word was out on the world-wide wildlife web that whoever
got the next chance to put an end to Steve's endless harassment would have our blessing.
Was there a creature he hadn't leapt on and groped for the camera?
Just the Stingray, and he was about to. Forget that blarney they dragged out the next day about
the video footage of 'the moment'. (Why won't they show you?)
For me to be within striking distance of him meant that he was in striking distance of me
... so I got in first! Wake up, people! It's the First Law of Wildlife!
Was there ever an on-camera moment where Steve didn't go for the grapple? No.
For the Queensland police spokesman (with Irwin lieutenant beside him) to say that "Steve Irwin did
nothing to provoke the Stingray" flies in the face of everything the public had come to expect of him
- it was the basis of his celebrity! - and shows misplaced police understanding of wildlife
and Irwin's teams' disingenuousness. "Nothing to provoke" ... well, I was there and I was the judge
of that. Clearly, I, the Stingray felt threatened. Not on my back you don't!
Sorry to rain on you humans' parade, but your fixation with paltry 'celebrity' has sowed the seeds
of the grief you fleetingly feel. The Dianafication of Steve Irwin just goes to show how hundreds
of millions of people can be so wrong!
But don't worry, the same-mould grooming of little Barbie ... er, Bindi ... (soon to be followed by
little Bob) will now be accelerated and she'll soon have her own internationally syndicated TV show
and DVD franchise and the Irwin empire will barely skip a beat.
Crickey, you didn't think they'd ditch such a money-spinner did you?
No way.
You heard it first from The Stingray.

Is it also true that certain members of the Animal community believe that they will turn into marginal voters becasue of Mr. Irwins passing?
Is it true you attacked Mr. Irwin so that said animals would lose their democratic voice so you can take over the leadership of the animal community?

It's anarchy out here; survival of the fittest, Law of the Jungle and all that stuff.
We don't vote and never will.
It's humans who are stuffing up this planet - you fix it!
